The Rail Trail is years in the making. Initially, it was proposed as a walking path that would connect the Albuquerque Rail Yards to downtown Albuquerque. Over time, the vision has changed. The City of Albuquerque has expanded this already ambitious project to include a number of enticing features, including some new local landmarks. It is being called "the biggest project... since the zoo and the Biopark."

The Rail Trail will consist of 11 major sections in the Downtown area, including the Rail Yards, the Sawmill District, Old Town, Tingley Beach, and the Barela’s neighborhood. Each section will be customized to capture the spirit of the community. Once complete, the trail will be a 7-mile loop highlighting the town's scenic stops along the Rio Grande, tourist spots, and other features.

New developments planned as a part of the Rail Trail include a 25-foot neon tumbleweed, and a new “Enchantment Plaza” near the Big-I. The Enchantment Plaza will be a multi-level structure with space for food trucks, vendors and other events on the ground. An elevated path will also provide views of the Sandia mountains in the distance. (Read more)

The Rail Trail is expected to become a major tourist attraction. It is also expected to contribute to the revitalization of downtown Albuquerque.

The Rail Trail is expected to start taking shape this year. We're excited- are you?!
